Our Favorite beaches
-
lanikai beach
If the stunning views of the Mokulua Islands don’t make you fall in love, maybe the powdered sugar sand or the occasional turtle sighting will. This is our favorite beach to swim, throw a ball, and take a peaceful nap. Also, the views driving to the East side of the island are unbeatable!
-
Keiki Beach
Keiki Beach, located on Oahu’s North Shore, sits in the heart of the island's famous “Seven Mile Miracle”, home to some of the world’s best surf breaks. Despite its beauty, it’s almost always empty. Some of the most memorable sunsets we’ve ever seen have taken place on this beach.
-
Waimea Bay
This is one of the most iconic beaches on the North Shore for a reason! The vast blue waters, the long stretch of beach, and the big jumping rock offer a little something for everyone. Just make sure to arrive in the morning—parking is limited. While you’re in the area, check out Waimea Valley across the street for waterfalls, botanical gardens and peacocks.
-
Makapu'u Beach
Makapu'u Beach is a scenic, secluded beach located on the southeastern coast of Oahu. Known for its striking views of Makapu'u Point and the distant offshore islands, the beach offers dramatic coastal beauty that may look familiar from one of Sami’s favorite movies, 50 First Dates.
-
Waimanalo Beach
Waimanalo Beach is one of Barry Braverman's top picks, and for good reason—its expansive shoreline, perfect boogie-board-able shore break and lush mountain backdrop make it the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city.
-
Kaimana Beach
In college, Sami’s best friend Kelley worked at the Outrigger Canoe Club next door, and while waiting for Kelley to finish her shift so they could canoe surf, Sami would hang out here, people-watch, and and take in the iconic Waikiki skyline. Although an unassuming place to snorkel, we have seen some of the craziest fish near the sea wall.
Our Favorite Activities
-
Snorkel at hanauma bay
Hanauma Bay is Oahu's ultimate destination for snorkeling. Whether you're a seasoned snorkeler or a first-timer, you'll have an amazing time exploring this peaceful, protected bay, filled with colorful coral reefs and a variety of marine life.
You must book in advance to visit Hanauma Bay. -
Take a tour at Kualoa Ranch
This 4,000-acre property has been the backdrop for over 200 movies and TV shows. Whether you're a movie buff like Adam or a lover of stunning views like Sami, you'll fall in love with this place. Don’t miss the UTV tour, e-bike adventure, or horseback ride for an unforgettable day.
View tours here. -
KANEOHE SANDBAR
The Sandbar is a 3-mile long, picturesque island covered in a couple feet of crystal clear water. Above the water, you'll enjoy stunning views of the surrounding mountains, while under the water’s surface, the edges of the sandbar are home to a variety of thriving marine life, including turtles. Visiting is always one of our favorite days of the trip!
We like to take the Captain Bruce Snorkel Tour.
-
HOOMALUHIA BOTANICAL GARDENS
Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden is a serene tropical paradise nestled in the foothills of the Koolau Mountains, offering stunning views, lush landscapes, and a peaceful escape. Home to the endangered nene birds, the garden also features walking trails, tranquil lakes, and a diverse collection of plants from around the world.
-
horseback ride at turtle bay
What better way to explore the stunning property featured in movies and TV shows like The Hunger Games and Lost than on horseback? This tour lets you immerse yourself in the same landscapes seen on the big screen. Even if you are not a movie buff, you will enjoy the coastal views along the trail.
-
Take a sunset cruise
Taking a sunset cruise through Waikiki is one activity we never skip. While boats run throughout the day, there's something special about watching the sunset and the city skyline light up in the evening. Plus, most boats offer cocktails on board, making the experience even more enjoyable! Our favorite boats are Kepoikai and Na Hoku.
Our Favorite HIKES
-
LANIKAI PILLBOX TRAIL
Although this hike is short in distance, it delivers on the views. Throughout most of the trail, you’ll be overlooking turquoise waters and the Mokulua islands. Make sure to pack water as there is no shade and it gets hot!
We like to hike to the pillbox and then cool off at Lanikai Beach. -
KOKO HEAD crater
This one is hard—you can’t say we didn’t warn you! By looking at it from a distance you know exactly what you are getting into. A steep climb up 1,000+ stairs with no-shade. But the views make everything worth it. Our favorite thing to do is climb Koko Head early, and then head straight to Koko Head Cafe for breakfast (a.k.a., the “Koko Head & Koko Head Special”).
-
manoa falls
This easy hike leads you through a lush rainforest full of banyan trees and bamboo groves and ends at a 150-foot waterfall. This is one of our favorites when we need a quick escape from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu.
-
makapu'u lighthouse trail
The Makapuu Lighthouse Trail offers breathtaking views of the rugged coastline, vast blue waters, and some of our favorite beaches on the southeast side of the island. Since the trail is paved, it’s a relatively easy hike that is very rewarding in views.
-
ehukai pillbox
This North Shore favorite takes you to a viewpoint with stunning views of the "Seven Mile Miracle" and some of the world’s most famous surf breaks. Once you finish this rewarding hike, directly cross the street and you’ll end up at Banzai Pipeline.
-
Kuliouo Ridge Trail
This challenging yet rewarding hike offers stunning panoramic views of Oahu’s southeastern coast. As you reach the top, you'll be greeted with breathtaking sights of lush valleys, vibrant coastline, and the sparkling Pacific Ocean.
Our Favorite FOOD, DRINK AND TREATS
-
koko head cafe
This may be Sami and Adam’s favorite restaurant… ever. They serve island-style brunch that will transport you straight to heaven. Sami never leaves without ordering the Breakfast Bruschetta, and Adam’s favorite is the Chicky and Eggs. Other dishes you can’t miss: The Ricotta Pancakes with bacon and black pepper maple and the “Best Hash Brown Ever.”
Please trust us on this one—you have to go.
-
Fresh Catch
Arguably one of the most important meals you’ll eat in Hawaii is a poke bowl. Lucky for you, Adam has tried all of them and has crowned a winner: Fresh Catch. Other local favorites include Ono Seafood and Maguro Brothers. You can also count on finding a great poke counter at any Foodland store across the island.
-
leonard's bakery
Every birthday and celebration Sami spent on island included one special treat: a warm malasada from Leonard’s. If you've never had a malasada, it’s a must-try. And if you’ve had one before, we guarantee this will be the best one yet.
-
ululani's shaved ice
Ululani’s has always been a Marx-family favorite spot on their trips to Maui. With their shop now open in Honolulu, it is sure to be one of your favorites, too.
Before Ululani’s opened in Honolulu, our favorites were Waiola Shave Ice and Island Snow. Be sure to give those a try too!
-
Hideout
This has quickly become one of our favorite restaurants. The laid-back rooftop lounge and live music create the perfect vibe for a fun night out. But what really keeps us coming back is the amazing food—between the cocktails, burger, and shared plates, you're in for an awesome meal.
-
Banan
We get Banan at least three times every visit. The best part is, it’s perfect for any time of day—you can eat it for breakfast, dessert, or just a refreshing snack to cool down. And it’s guilt free, too! It has no added sugar, it’s dairy-free, and is made from locally grown Hawaiian bananas.
-
elephant shack
Elephant Shack is, in our opinion, the best Thai food there is. Get the Pad Kra Pow, and Pad Kee Mao. If you’re daring, get it spicy. Best enjoyed with good company on the beach.
-
bario ramen
There’s not much we enjoy more than a spicy bowl of hot ramen—even when it’s 85 degrees outside. Bario Ramen, located inside the lively Japanese Food Hall STIX, will transport you straight to Japan with its rich flavors and vibrant atmosphere.
Another local favorite is Onoya Ramen on Kapahulu. -
turtle bay resort pool bar
If you’re on the North Shore, be sure to explore the Turtle Bay property and grab a drink at the pool bar. This is our favorite pina colada/ lava flow on the island, as well as one of the most beautiful sunset spots. If you’re lucky enough to be served by Vinny, be sure to tell him Adam and Sami sent you!
Easily explore the island by adding our recommended spots to your Google Maps.
